Sam Raimi’s ‘The Evil Dead’ Is One of Hollywood’s Greatest Underdog Stories [Halloweenies Podcast]

In the Fall of 1979, a Michigan State filmmaker and his childhood friends ventured into the Tennessee woods to make a horror movie. What started out as a dream quickly devolved into a nightmare: a grueling series of weeks involving buckets of fake blood, myriad near-death experiences, ricocheting emotions, and dozens of sleepless nights.

It’s one of the greatest underdog stories in Hollywood history, one that starts in Midwestern backyards, makes its way overseas to France, and eventually lands in living rooms across the world. Here to tell it all are your trusty Halloweenies, who kick off their new season with the first of two episodes dedicated to Sam Raimi‘s The Evil Dead.

Join the gang as they gather around the table and share their first experiences with the 1981 midnight masterpiece before dialing the clock back to chart its origins. It’s the beginning of a groovy new journey for the Halloweenies that sees them chopping through the entire franchise ahead of Lee Cronin‘s forthcoming sequel Evil Dead Rise.

Stream the episode below or subscribe via iTunes/Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, RadioPublic, Acast, Google Podcasts, and RSS. New to the Halloweenies? Catch up with the gang by revisiting their essential episodes on past franchises such as Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and Scream.

You can also become a member of their Patreon, The Rewind, for hilariously irreverent commentaries (e.g. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Gremlins, Child’s Play) and one-off deep dives on your favorite rentals (e.g. Saw, 28 Days Later, Manhunter, Near Dark). Each month promises something new and unexpected from the wildest corners of the genre.
