Mutiny Pictures will be releasing the Australian queer horror/drama So Vam, which was produced and directed by 17-year-old trans filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay.
Bloody Disgusting shares this exclusive look at the film in which the characters discuss the history of vampires, including that Bram Stoker was queer.

“Kurt is an outcast in a conservative town who dreams of moving to the city to be a famous drag queen. When he is kidnapped by a predatory old vampire and killed, he is rescued just in time to be resurrected by a gang of rebellious vampires who feed on bigots and abusers.”
The film stars Xai, Grace Hyland, Chris Asimos (Danger 5, Welfare), and Benjamin Putnam, aka BenDeLaCreme (RuPaul’s Drag Race, RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars).
“So Vam is a project of passion and commitment – to share stories of the so often marginalised voices in our community,” said Maio Mackay. “It uses vampire mythology to create an allegory of the challenges and triumphs of the LBTQIA+ community, and the power of finding your voice and family. It is a camp, heart-warming, and fun ride with an empowering message. As a 17-year-old transgender woman and film lover, I am proud to present a film that includes everything I want in a horror coming-of-age film, including authentic trans/queer/nonbinary representation with trans and queer characters being played by trans and queer actors, which is an anomaly in the film industry.”
The film was co-written by Benjamin Pahl Robinson and Alice Maio Mackay. Mutiny Pictures acquired the film out of the 2021 Salem Horror Fest.
