Filming is now underway on HBO’s “The Last of Us,” their small screen adaptation of the popular video game, but if you’re hoping it’ll premiere this year, you may be disappointed.
HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys tells Deadline this week that “The Last of Us” will not be premiering in 2022, but we can likely expect it sometime in 2023.
Bloys explains, “It’s not going to air in 2022, they are still shooting in Canada. I imagine you will see it in 23.”
He adds, “I have seen some early episodes and I’m very excited. Craig did Chernobyl for us, he is a fantastic writer and director. What I’ve seen looks amazing so I’m excited for it.”
Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”) is developing the series for HBO, and he’ll be working with Neil Druckmann to write and executive produce the small screen adaptation.
“The series takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”
Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian”) is starring in the series as Joel and Bella Ramsey (“Game of Thrones”) is playing Ellie. Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate) is playing Tommy, the brother of Pascal’s Joel. Storm Reid, Anna Torv, Jeffrey Pierce, Nick Offerman, Merle Dandridge, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett and Con O’Neil will also star in the series.
Kantemir Balagov (Beanpole) will be directing the pilot episode of HBO’s “The Last of Us” series, with Jasmila Žbanić (Quo vadis, Aida) and Ali Abbasi (Border) also directing episodes.
