The worlds of Archie and Riverdale are once again returning to the world of horror. Known lately for their one-shots such as Camp Pickens, the horror side of Archie Comics is expanding with an all new one-shot comic book from the Archie Horror imprint and Bloody-Disgusting has the exclusive reveal as well as some insight from the creators themselves.
Bloody Disgusting can report that Welcome to Riverdale by Amy Chase with Art by Liana Kangas is set to hit shelves on October 11, 2023 wherever you buy comics!
Chilling Adventures Presents… Welcome to Riverdale will follow the story of Ginger Snapp as she travels to the titular town of Riverdale. She’s been obsessed with the town since she heard about it growing up and her expectations are met when she realizes how welcoming and friendly the whole community is. But the more people she meets the more she realizes that something is off and Riverdale may not be entirely what it seems…
See, the people there are TOO nice, to the point of being in uncanny valley territory. Ginger soon realizes that if she doesn’t get out she may just go mad from all of it. Welcome to Riverdale is a one-shot horror comic that explores toxic positivity that is equal parts inspired by Pleasantville and The Stepford Wives.
Speaking exclusively to Bloody-Disgusting, Writer Amy Chase had this to say about Welcome to Riverdale:
“Riverdale itself is a character in this book, so we want to be sure readers really feel like they’re being greeted by familiar faces and places. Longtime fans and the newly Archie-curious should all find something to enjoy as we spotlight the absolute best the iconic town has to offer and try to keep its uncanny, dark secrets swept under the rug. I hope people feel a little unsettled, but also charmed by what’s in store here.”
Artist Liana Kangas had this to say about what horror fans can expect from Welcome to Riverdale:
“My favorite part so far is a key moment in the opening scene where a *major* character does something very dramatic and slightly expected but still jarring–I love to surprise the reader by establishing what you know of these characters already and then pushing the envelope with them.”
With Riverdale always being portrayed as an idyllic place where absolutely nothing can go wrong, consider us interested in that idea being flipped on its head to tell a horror story. All the secrets and the fate of Ginger will be revealed when Welcome to Riverdale hits comic book shelves on October 11, 2023.
