Three New Horror Movies Releasing at Home This Week Plus ‘The Northman’ in Theaters!

This week is headlined by the return of The Witch and The Lighthouse director Robert Eggers, whose brand new Viking epic The Northman brings brutality to theaters on Friday.

Additionally, three new horror movies are headed straight home this week, and we’re also getting some new horror – and true crime – in the series arena this week as well.

Here’s all the new horror arriving April 18-24, 2022!

'Bloody Oranges' - Red Band Trailer for "Shocking Black Comedy" [Exclusive]

Up first this week, Dark Star Pictures is unleashing the “shocking black comedy” Bloody Oranges on Tuesday, which came to limited theaters last month and now comes to VOD.

In Bloody Oranges, “A retired couple enter a dance contest, a corrupt politician, a girl eager to lose her virginity, and a young lawyer obsessed with social status – a seemingly benign look into these daily lives goes haywire in this shocking black comedy.”

The cast includes Alexandre SteigerChristophe Paou, and Lilith Grasmug.

Jean-Christophe Meurisse directed Bloody Oranges.

Netflix John Wayne Gacy series

From Blair Witch 2 director Joe Berlinger, director of The Ted Bundy Tapes, comes Netflix‘s latest true crime docu-series Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes.

The 3-episode limited series premieres April 20. Watch the trailer below.

“Serial killer John Wayne Gacy was an aspiring politician, beloved local contractor, and part-time clown-for-hire who murdered 33 young men between 1972 and 1976. The majority of his victims were found buried under his house, in the quiet northwest suburbs of Chicago.

“Fifty years later, DNA scientists are still trying to identify all of his victims, but thanks to 60 hours of unearthed audio between Gacy and his defense team, we have fresh perspective on the narcissistic mindset of the murderer and a deeper understanding of how he operated for so long with impunity.

“The second installment in an ongoing series from filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes), this three-part documentary also features new interviews with key participants – some of whom have never talked before, including gut-wrenching testimony from one of Gacy’s survivors – all in search of answers to a crucial question: How was a public figure like Gacy able to get away with murder for so long?”

Shudder‘s Halfway to Halloween celebration rolls on with brand new original horror movie Virus 32 on Thursday, April 21st, wherein a deadly virus breaks out and wreaks havoc.

The film comes from Uruguayan director Gustavo Hernandez (You Shall Not Sleep).

In Virus 32, “A virus breaks out and a chilling massacre rages through the streets of Montevideo. The sick become hunters, and only calm their fever by unscrupulously killing all those not yet infected. Unaware of this, Iris and her daughter spend the day in the sports club where Iris works as a security guard. When the night comes a fight without mercy is about to begin. Their only hope of salvation arrives when they discover that after each attack the infected seem to have 32 seconds of peace before charging again.”

And that brings us to Friday and the return of Robert Eggers with The Northman, “an action-filled epic that follows a young Viking prince on his quest to avenge his father’s murder.”

The Northman will be playing exclusively in movie theaters.

From acclaimed director Robert Eggers comes The Northman starring Alexander Skarsgard, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Björk. The film is directed by Robert Eggers, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón. Producers are Lars Knudsen, Mark Huffam and New Regency.

Meagan wrote in her review for BD, “The beating heart of The Northman is a familiar tale of revenge, but in Eggers’ hands, it’s at least deeply engrossing.”

Also on Friday, indie horror movie We’re All Going to the World’s Fair will begin playing in theaters and on Digital, the narrative feature debut of writer-director Jane Schoenbrun.

“The coming-of-age horror-drama follows teenager Casey who becomes immersed in an online role-playing horror game, wherein she begins to document the changes that may or may not be happening to her.”

“Reality and illusion collide as Casey opts to take part in the World’s Fair Challenge, a mysterious online horror game that asks participants to, Bloody Mary style, repeat “I want to go to the World’s Fair” three times before drawing blood from their finger. As she starts to document what happens next through viral videos, her grip begins to loosen, and a mysterious figure starts to beckon her from the depths of the internet — or her own unconscious.”

HBO Max has licensed U.S. streaming rights to this one.

And finally, HBO delivers “The Baby” on Sunday, April 24th, a limited series horror-comedy about the horrors of motherhood from creators Siân Robins-Grace and Lucy Gaymer.

Michelle De Swarte (“The Duchess”) stars as 38-year-old Natasha, who is furious that her closest friends are all having babies. But when she is unexpectedly landed with a baby of her own, her life dramatically implodes. Controlling, manipulative, but incredibly cute, the baby twists Natasha’s life into a surreal horror show. As she discovers the true extent of the baby’s deadly nature, Natasha makes increasingly desperate attempts to get rid of it.

She doesn’t want a baby. But the baby definitely wants her.

The series also stars Amira Ghazalla (“The Rhythm Section”) as Mrs. Eaves, the 70-year-old enigma who has spent the last fifty years living out of her car and seems to be everywhere the Baby is, and Amber Grappy as Bobbi, Natasha’s younger sister, a children’s magician who would love nothing more than to be a parent, to give love and to receive it.
