Those that stayed through the end credits of Matt Reeves‘ The Batman were prompted to head to rataalada.com. It begins an extensive ARG for the film, where the Riddler tasks players with riddles and codes to crack for exclusive images.
It all culminated in one final prize: a deleted scene from The Batman that gives a closer look at one of the film’s most significant cameos.
That cameo, of course, is of Barry Keoghan‘s character, who shows up briefly at the end of the film. While never credited as such, fans instantly recognize him as the Joker.
In a recent interview with IGN, Reeves confirmed the character was indeed Joker and revealed that there was a lot more to Keoghan’s role that was ultimately cut, “What’s interesting is that the reason that Joker’s in the movie is there was actually another scene that was earlier. And because the movie is not an origin tale for Batman, but it’s his early days, it really is an origin tale for the Rogue’s Gallery’s characters. And for me, I think [it’s] this idea that the Joker is not yet the Joker, but they already have this relationship.”
Reeves explains of the scene that Batman (Robert Pattinson) seeks help profiling his new adversary from an old foe. “He goes to see another killer that he’s clearly had an experience with in these first two years. And this killer in this story is not yet the character that we come to know, right? So everybody’s in their infancy. So in the comics, these characters often declare their alter egos in response to the fact that there’s a Batman out there. And so here, we have a Joker who’s not yet the Joker.”

“Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman, striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City.
