Studio71 Inks Deal to Develop Film Adaptation of MOB Games’ ‘Poppy Playtime’

Chalk up MOB Games’ first-person horror title Poppy Playtime as the latest upcoming videogame-to-film adaptation. The developer is teaming up with Studio71 to develop and produce the film, which both parties are banking for future franchise potential.

According to Deadline, the project is already being fast-tracked by Studio71, with talks to bring on board producer Roy Lee. Lee is obviously no stranger to horror, having produced films such as both It films, Doctor Sleep, The Grudge (both the American remake and the 2020 reboot), and more recently the upcoming Salem’s Lot adaptation from Gary Dauberman.

“We never could have imagined that [Poppy Playtime] would become as popular as it is with such an enormous and ever-growing legion of fans,” said Mob Games’ President & CEO, Zach Belanger. “We are so excited to deliver the next chapter of our game and beyond excited to work with Studio71 to transform Poppy into a feature film. It’s going to be a great ride!”

According to Studio71’s President of Scripted Content Michael Schreiber, MOB Games’ vision for the title is “a vivid tapestry” that allow for the film to expand upon what already exists in the game without retread. As such, the film will feature a new storyline “that stands alone as its own terrifying and gripping saga.”

In Poppy Playtime, you are trying to escape an abandoned toy factory, while at the same time avoiding the wrath of the vengeful toys lurking in the dark. In particular, you’re trying to avoid Huggy Wuggy: a towering furry blue monster with multiple rows of teeth. The game’s main mechanic is the GrabPack, a wearable backpack that sports two hands with extendable arms. The GrabPack factors into solving puzzles, where you’ll have to pick up objects, push hard-to-reach buttons, manipulate electrical currents and more.

The first chapter of Poppy Playtime is available now on Steam. The second chapter was announced back in February.
