After Remedy wowed longtime Alan Wake fans with Alan Wake Remastered last year (including us), rumours were swirling that their (former) other big-name property, Max Payne, would get a similar treatment. Those rumours happily turned out to be true, as Remedy has announced that they, along with current rights holder Rockstar Games, will produce remakes of Max Payne and May Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne as one game!
Currently still in the development stage, Max Payne 1&2 as it will be called will be developed by Remedy for PC, PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series using its proprietary Northlight game engine. The game’s development budget will be financed by Rockstar Games. Under the agreement, Remedy will be given royalties after Rockstar Games has recouped the project’s development and marketing costs for distributing and publishing the game.
“We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games,” Rockstar Games founder Sam Houser stated in a press release. “We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”
For those not up to snuff, the original Max Payne was released back in 2001 for PC, followed by PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2002. The game centred around New York cop Max Payne, who is out for justice for the murder of his wife and child, along with trying to find out who framed him for the murder of his partner. The game was notable for its film noir styling, as well as its use of Bullet Time to slow down the chaotic action at the press of a button (plus, you know, The Matrix).
Max Payne 2, which was released in 2003 for PC, PlayStation 2 and Xbox, picked up after the events of the first game, where Max Payne has rejoined the NYPD. While investigating a routine murder, Max crosses paths with Mona Sax, a fugitive from the first game, who agrees to help Max with his investigation. Eventually, the two come across another major conspiracy from the fallout of the events years prior.
The success of the games resulted in the 2008 John Moore film adaptation starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis.
In addition to Max Payne 1&2, Remedy is also working away at Alan Wake 2, which is expected in 2023.
