Oscar-Nominated ‘Misery’ Actor James Caan Has Passed Away at 82

We’ve lost another acting legend, with James Caan‘s official Twitter account reporting this afternoon that James Caan passed away at the age of 82 on the evening of July 6th.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time,” the account tweeted.

In the horror world, James Caan is of course known for playing Paul Sheldon in Rob Reiner’s Stephen King adaptation Misery, a successful author who ends up imprisoned at the home of a sadistic fan in the wake of a car wreck. That film was released in 1990, with Caan subsequently starring in genre films including Alien Nation, Eraser, Sicilian Vampire, and The Good Neighbor.

James Caan also made a cameo appearance in the memorable opening sequence to Santa’s Slay, a cult Christmas-themed horror-comedy movie that was released in 2005.

Of course, James Caan is most known for his role in The Godfather, the 1972 film helping to make Caan a household name and also nabbing him an Oscar nomination the following year.

Caan was also nominated for an Emmy in 1972 for Brian’s Song.

Other notable James Caan roles include Rollerball, Thief, Dick Tracy, Honeymoon in Vegas, The Program, Bottle Rocket, The Way of the Gun, Elf, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
