‘Godzilla Minus One’ Just Became the #3 Highest Grossing International Movie in U.S. Box Office History

Toho’s Godzilla Minus One just made its way back into U.S. theaters over the weekend with a brand new black & white version of the Oscar-nominated movie, and along with that new release comes a major bit of news. The film has now crossed over $55 MILLION in total U.S. box office, making it the #3 Highest Grossing Foreign Language Film in U.S. history!!

Godzilla Minus One passed Hero ($53.7 million) and Parasite ($53.3) to claim that honor. The critically acclaimed film’s worldwide total currently stands at a massive $102.6 million.

The only films that are ahead of Godzilla Minus One on this particular list are:

  • #1 – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – $128.5 million (U.S.)
  • #2 – Life Is Beautiful – $57.5 million (U.S.)

Godzilla Minus One is currently just $2.5 million shy of Life Is Beautiful‘s U.S. box office total, which would put it in the #2 spot for international films at the U.S. box office!

The bad news there is that Godzilla Minus One – both the standard version and the “Minus Color” black & white version – is only set to play in U.S. theaters through this week.

But we’ll be keeping a close eye on the box office charts this week…

Toho’s Godzilla Minus One, written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, sees an already devastated post-World War II Japan facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla.

Matt Donato writes in his 4.5 star review for Bloody Disgusting, “Minus One is a blessing to Toho’s kaiju franchise and a towering accomplishment for the entire kaiju subgenre.”

The rave review continues, “After thirty-plus films and nearly seventy years, Toho confidently delivers one of their best Godzilla movies to date.”

The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki, with music by Naoki Sato.
