‘Dune’ Sequel Is Officially Happening and Will Release in Two Years

After making over $220 million at the worldwide box office, in addition to nearly 2 million views at home via HBO Max, a sequel to Dune – as planned – has been ordered up!

Dune: Part 2 will release October 2023, Legendary and Warner Bros. announced today.

In its first days of release, Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune has pulled in $41 million domestically and $182 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $223,211,174. The film, an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel, was made on a reported production budget of $165 million, which means it still has to make quite a bit more in order to break even at the box office.

Regardless, it’s clear that Legendary and Warner Bros. are happy with Dune‘s performance in theaters and at home thus far, enough to order up the sequel they had been planning for.

This is only the beginning…

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

The cast includes Timothée Chalamet‘s Paul Atreides, Josh Brolin‘s Gurney Halleck, Oscar Isaac‘s Duke Leto, Rebecca Ferguson‘s Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem‘s Stilgar, Zendaya‘s Chani, Sharon Duncan-Brewster‘s Liet-Kynes and Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho.

Villeneuve directed Dune from a screenplay he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts.
