‘Barbarian’ Director Shares the Two-Minute Mood Reel He Put Together to Help Sell the Movie [Video]

20th Century Studios has an original horror hit on their hands with Barbarian, which opened to $10 million here in the United States this past weekend. Positive word of mouth is largely responsible for the film’s opening weekend success, with Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro raving in her review that Barbarian is one of 2022’s biggest crowd-pleasers.

Meagan writes, “Barbarian demands to be seen with a crowd.”

Like all movies, Barbarian was just an idea in its creator’s mind before cameras started rolling, and this week writer/director Zach Cregger has shared the “mood reel” that helped him sell the concept. Cregger explains, “When trying to sell your movie you gotta cut together a ‘Rip Reel’. I used YouTube videos/other peoples movies/and my wife’s voice about 2 years ago.”

As many fans have pointed out, the best way to go into Barbarian is completely blind, as the movie takes you on a wild ride you could’ve never seen coming, but those who saw and enjoyed Barbarian in theaters over the weekend will surely get a kick out of his early mood reel. It’s essentially the first trailer for the movie, before it was actually even made.

Do not miss Barbarian in theaters. Trust us. It’s one you’ll want to experience with a crowd.

In Barbarian, a young woman (Georgina Campbell) traveling to Detroit for a job interview books a rental home. But when she arrives late at night, she discovers that the house is double booked, and a strange man (Bill Skarsgård) is already staying there.

Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the evening, but soon discovers that there’s a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.

Written and directed by Zach Cregger, the film also stars Justin Long, Matthew Patrick Davis, Richard Brake, Kurt Braunohler and Jaymes Butler.
