5 of This Week’s Coolest Horror Collectibles Including ‘The Thing’ Prequel on SteelBook Blu-ray

Killer Collectibles highlights five of the most exciting new horror products announced each and every week, from toys and apparel to artwork, records, and much more.

Here are the coolest horror collectibles unveiled this week!

Invaluable: The True Story of an Epic Artist Blu-ray from Synapse

The life and art of Evil Dead special effects artist Tom Sullivan is the subject of Invaluable: The True Story of an Epic Artist. Directed by Ryan Meade, the documentary will be released on Blu-ray on August 1 via Synapse Films.

It features archival Super 8mm, Hi8, VHS, audio, and photo materials, plus new interviews with Bruce Campbell, Ted Raimi, Josh Becker, Danny Hicks, Hal Delrich, Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker, Theresa Tilly, Scott Spiegel, and more.

The disc carries nearly four hours of extras, including Other Men’s Careers, a documentary on filmmaker/Evil Dead alumnus Josh Becker; a 1989 interview with Sullivan; an unedited interview with The Evil Dead cinematographer Tim Philo; two short films by Meade; and more.

Casey Jones as The Phantom Figure from NECA

Casey Jones as The Phantom of the Opera will join NECA’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles X Universal Monsters toy line in June. It’s available to pre-order for $34.99.

The 7” scale action figure comes with three interchangeable heads (including a skull), eight interchangeable hands, two hockey gloves, two hockey sticks, and removable cloak. It’s packaged in a window box with opening flap featuring art by Daniel Horne.

This is the seventh figure in NECA’s TMNT X Universal Monsters series, following Raphael as Frankenstein, Leonardo as Ygor, Michelangelo as The Mummy, April as Bride of Frankenstein, Splinter as Van Helsing, and Donatello as The Invisible Man.

Final Girls Prints by Matthew Therrien

Matthew Therrien has launched a series of Final Girls portraits with Halloween’s Laurie Strode, Alien’s Ellen Ripley, Friday the 13th Part 2’s Ginny Field, A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Nancy Thompson, and Scream’s Sidney Prescott.

5×7 giclee prints on watercolor paper, limited to 50 each, cost $25, while open edition 8×10 giclee prints on heavy stock are $20. Therrien plans to add five new portraits to the series each month.

The Thing Steelbook Blu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment

A prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic, the 2011 version of The Thing has received a SteelBook Blu-ray release exclusively at Walmart via Mill Creek Entertainment. Priced at $19.96, it includes a semi-transparent slipcover.

The sci-fi horror film is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and written by Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Lights Out). Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Eric Christian Olsen star.

Two new special features — “Who Goes There? Cast & Crew” and “What Goes There? Behind-the-Scenes” — are included along with a commentary by van Heijningen and producer Eric Newman, making-of and stunts featurettes, and the trailer.

Ghostbusters Proton Pack from Spirit Halloween

Spirit Halloween exclusively carries a Ghostbusters proton pack. The life-size replica measures 26” high, 15” wide, and 10” deep. It features lights and sounds, three activation modes (power up, power down, and shoot), detachable particle thrower, and adjustable straps. A pair of gloves and three patches are included.

It’ll cost you $249.99, which isn’t so bad when you consider Hasbro charged $400 for their replica two years ago — and that one didn’t come with the particle thrower.
