Fresh off its buzzy premiere at SXSW, supernatural horror film Monitor has been acquired by Searchlight Pictures.
In the movie, something begins to spread after a disturbing video surfaces online — moving from screen to screen and targeting anyone who watches. No escape. No warning. Once you’ve seen it… it’s already too late.
Writers-directors Matt Black & Ryan Polly make their feature debut on the project, based on their 2018 short film of the same name.
Brittany O’Grady, Viveik Karla, Ines Høysæter Asserson, Gunner Willis, Sara Alexander, and Camila Bejarano Wahlgren star.
“When we made the original Monitor short film eight years ago, we never imagined it would one day find a home at Searchlight Pictures,” said Black and Polly. “We’re beyond thrilled to be partnering with them to bring this monster to theaters, where it truly belongs on the big screen. Monitor was always meant to be experienced with a room full of people being terrified together.”
“Matt and Ryan have crafted a visceral, modern thriller that taps directly into our collective fear of what may lurk just out of view, at the edges of our screens — delivering a truly wild ride.” Searchlight Pictures president Matthew Greenfield added. “We can’t wait to bring it to audiences.”
Temple Hill Entertainment (Smile, Clown in a Cornfield), Nostromo Pictures (“The Night Manager,” Bird Box: Barcelona), and Protagonist Pictures (The Lobster, Monsters) produce.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her review out of SXSW, “Black & Polly adhere to a conventional horror formula with Monitor, the type of supernatural slasher in the vein of A Nightmare on Elm Street meets The Ring that feels comforting in its familiarity.”
Searchlight is planning a 2027 theatrical release for Monitor. Stay tuned for details.
