It’s now been seven years(!) since the release of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the long awaited feature film adaptation of the ’80s/’90s books written by Alvin Schwartz. The film was a success at the box office for Lionsgate, scaring up $104 million at the worldwide box office, but we’ve still never gotten the sequel that horror fans have been craving ever since.
Speaking with Slash Film this week, director André Øvredal (Passenger) provides the latest update on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2, which he personally is ready to make.
André Øvredal explains to Slash Film, “What I can say is that it’s been stuck in a bit of a copyright ownership hell with two studios that don’t exist anymore, that produced a movie together, CBS Films and EOne, and they don’t really exist anymore.”
“The rights spread out to two other companies, and then they have to agree to figure it out between them, and that has taken some time,” he continues. “We do have conversations about it once every couple of months, and there is currently some movement, I’m gathering.”
Øvredal adds, “But it becomes about legal departments and not about creatives, because we have a story that I love that is just ready to go whenever somebody decides, ‘I own the movie, let’s go make it.'”
Last we heard, André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe) would be returning to direct the follow-up film, with Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman also returning to write the script.
The first film adapted horror tales from Alvin Schwartz’s three Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books, bringing Stephen Gammell’s terrifying illustrations to life for the first time. Presumably, the sequel will be pulling from other tales in those books, but will it continue the wraparound storyline from the first movie or take things in a new direction entirely?
The first film ended with Zoe Colletti’s heroine Stella Nicholls vowing to save her missing friends, taken by the various Gammell-inspired creatures unleashed throughout the film.
