NetherRealm Celebrates 30 Years of ‘Mortal Kombat’ With New Anniversary Video [Watch]

In case you missed it, Mortal Kombat turns 30 this month. Obviously, Warner Bros and NetherRealm Studios haven’t forgotten, and in celebration of 30 years of fatalities and the letter K, they’ve put together a nice little anniversary video celebrating the Mortal Kombat franchise across games, television and film.’

The series has sold more than 79 million units since the original arcade game hit back in 1992. And along with those sales, the series has been a fixture in popular culture, not to mention earning numerous awards across the industry. And for those wondering, the latest entry in the series in 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11 has been the fastest-selling title in franchise history, with more than 15 million units sold worldwide since its launch.

Of course, what would a celebration be without some announcements? While that elusive remaster of the original trilogy has yet to reappear, series co-creator Ed Boon says that the series will see a new entry in the future. But for the now, as part of the anniversary, 2021’s Mortal Kombat, alongside 1995’s Mortal Kombat, 2013’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy, and 2021’s animated film Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms are all available to watch now on HBO Max. And for those old-school gamers, 1996’s animated film Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm can also be purchased on digital platforms.

And keep an eye out later this month for our own celebration of Mortal Kombat, from the series’ famous fatalities to the controversy that inevitably seems to creep up when you have something as cool as Mortal Kombat.
