Eldritch Horror Meets Roguelike Gameplay in ‘Selenwald’ [Trailer]

The more Eldritch horror in video games, the merrier, right? Polish developer Unnamable Arts certainly caters to that with Selenwald, their currently-in-development action roguelike RPG where 18th century Europe meets dark fantasy and cosmic horror.

Currently aiming for a 2024 release on Steam, Selenwald sees you entering the halls of the eponymous university of Selenwald, where scientists hidden away from the world have discovered something that could be described as magic in terms of 1700s Western Europe. Unfortunately, tapping into such power has unleashed unspeakable horrors and madness into the world.

Selenwald gives players multiple ways to approach combat. You can play it quiet and use stealth, or face foes head on in melee combat, or use firearms and powerful magic to deal with enemies from afar. Plan your attacks carefully, as every attack has the potential to miss if executed blindly. Or, you could play it safe and rely on sneaking past enemies to avoid confrontation altogether.

You’ll have to be careful with just how make you use of your resources in Selenwald, and what you put in your inventory. Every bullet, potion and spell makes a difference. And seeing that this is a roguelike, death is permanent. However, your actions will have consequences that carry over to subsequent playthroughs.

In addition to the combat and gameplay, Unnamable Arts touts Selenwald‘s “dark, rich story of philosophical nature”. You’ll be meeting tragic characters along the way, while also discovering the very foundations of life and death, seeing the true, terrifying nature of matters humanity has desperately tried to explain with religion.
