Two years ago it was announced that Stephen King‘s killer car Christine would be coming back to life with Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) directing the new take for Blumhouse& Sony. Of course, original director John Carpenter has thoughts on this, revealed today in an interview with Total Film.
Christine is one of three Stephen King adaptations turning 40 in 2023, and Total Film spoke with Carpenter and original star Keith Gordon about the film’s momentous anniversary in their latest issue.
“I know there’s some rumblings about its anniversary. My question is ‘why’?” Carpenter cracked when speaking with the publication.
Total Film asked his thoughts about Fuller’s pending remake, and his answer was surprising: “Oh boy,” Carpenter says. “Well, good luck to him. It will probably be better.”
Carpenter wasn’t the only one who offered encouragement.
“I think he’s really talented, and a good person to do it,” Gordon told the outlet. “I mean, I don’t have a negative feeling about people remaking something, especially 40 years later. Christine could be told in a different way and not be an insult to the original. There’s a very short list of untouchable classics that should never be remade – films where their groundbreaking-ness or idiosyncrasy is what makes them special. I wouldn’t want to see anybody’s remake of Citizen Kane, or 2001, or Raging Bull.”
It was previously reported that “Fuller is getting under the hood with the intention to keep it in an ’80s time period and grounded in King’s bestseller.”
Producers for the remake include Jason Blum, Vincenzo Natali (Splice) and Steven Hoban.
The 1983 original was directed by John Carpenter, “about a shy teen (Arnie Cunningham) who comes out of his shell after he buys a ’58 Plymouth Fury to fix up. The car has a mind of its own, as well as a murderous past, and begins to change the young man and everyone around him in most dangerous fashion.”
While it’s been two years since the remake’s initial announcement, and production has yet to begin, it’s nice to know that Carpenter and star Gordon have faith in Fuller’s take on the material. Will this project ever come to fruition, though? Who knows.
1983’s Christine officially turns forty this December.
