Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein) and Josh Brolin (Weapons) seek hope in the end of the world in the first images from The Dog Stars, courtesy of Esquire.
From visionary director Ridley Scott, the post-apocalyptic thriller is written by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, Twisters), based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller.
“I think there’ve been rather too many apocalyptic movies,” Scott tells Esquire. “And I think I started off with a pretty tough one doing Blade Runner years ago. There was no end to the grimness of Blade Runner. In this, what I’m so pleased that came off was the strong feeling of hope.”
In The Dog Stars, a virus wipes out humanity and survivors face roaming scavengers called Reapers. Hig (Elordi), a civilian pilot who lost his wife to the disease, lives a lonely life on an abandoned Colorado airbase with his dog and a tough ex-marine (Brolin).
When a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside Hig that a better life exists outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return to follow its static-broken trail.
The cast also includes Margaret Qualley (The Substance) as medic Cima, Guy Pearce (Prometheus) as her stoic father Pops, and Benedict Wong (Weapons) as an encampment farmer.
“I think people will be surprised and engaged actually. I would say, hmm… charmed as well,” Scott says of the film. “Although, there is some violence.”
The Dog Stars soars into theaters August 28 via 20th Century Studios.
