From Dark Horse Comics, Adam Cesare’s (Clown in a Cornfield) cosmic horror comic Dead Mall is getting a horror movie adaptation, Variety exclusively reports this week.
Michael Varrati (“The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula,” “Fangoria Chainsaw Awards”) will write the Dead Mall movie, based on the 4-issue series from Cesare and David Stoll.
Varrati is said to be using both the comics themselves and “Cesare’s original story notes that include previously unseen material” to bring the tale to life as a feature film.
The story “follows five teens who sneak into their local mall for one last look before it’s demolished only to discover the mall is far from abandoned.
“Inside the crumbling retail labyrinth, they encounter a sprawling, ever-changing cosmic horror that has made the mall its home, transforming the familiar consumer temple into a nightmarish maze where survival is anything but guaranteed”
Dead Mall is being produced by Not the Funeral Home (“The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs”). “Dead Mall is like Event Horizon and Hellraiser in a mall — we are excited to work with Adam on this project,” Not the Funeral Home’s Matt Manjourides said in a statement.
