The online asymmetric multiplayer horror game that has outlasted all the rest is of course Behaviour Interactive’s Dead by Daylight, which is incredibly still going strong 10 YEARS after the slasher game was originally released. In fact, it’s only getting more and more popular, with licensed horror icons steadily being added and a Blumhouse movie now in the works.
Launched in 2016, the popular Dead by Daylight is a multiplayer slasher video game that pits characters up against slasher maniacs both original and iconic to the world of horror.
But are we ever getting Dead by Daylight 2? Or is the plan to just keep the first game alive and updated with a never-ending supply of new killers, survivors, and maps?
Behaviour Interactive’s Mathieu Cote and Dave Richard tell IGN in a new interview, “There’s always a point where we say, okay, we could do a sequel now, and it would be far easier actually to do a sequel with a blind slate than try to fix these issues that we have, for example.”
“But it never makes sense for the fans. Never ever,” the Dead by Daylight team continues. “They’ve invested time and money on DBD, and… that’s the game they want to play.”
Richard adds, “So, we can continue to put the effort so that they can have fun and still have value for the money.” Cote chimes in, “It’s also very possible to take your game and bring it kicking and screaming into the next decade. And that’s more what we want to do. We’re not going to do a Dead by Daylight 2, that’s for sure.”
Cote continues, “They’re not going to have to buy a DBD 2 and restart from scratch. But we understand that the game is 10 years old, and that’s a long time in video game years. We want people that start today, tomorrow, next year, to feel like they’re playing a game that is current. It’s not a nostalgia token, it’s a real game that you can play today and that makes sense.”
Other asymmetric horror games that have come in the wake of Dead by Daylight include Friday the 13th, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space, but Dead by Daylight has outlasted them all. The mix of original IP with licensed characters has proven incredibly popular over the years, and the game is showing no signs of dying anytime soon.
Up next, Halloween: The Game is coming for the throne in September – 10 years after Michael Myers, Laurie Strode, and a Haddonfield map were made playable in Dead by Daylight.
