Zack Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead’ Won the Oscars Fan Favorite Award

Last night’s Academy Awards ceremony was an unconventional one in more ways than one, with horror having quite the unexpected presence on the grandest stage of them all.

This year, the Oscars let movie fans get in on the action, with the Academy creating a special “Oscars Fan Favorite” category in an attempt to inject some new life into the proceedings. Essentially, this opened up the door for movies in the horror and superhero realms, as two examples, to get honorary Oscars, and the winner was announced last night.

Zack Snyder‘s Army of the Dead ended up winning the Oscars Fan Favorite Award for 2022, Snyder fans showing up in virtual droves to ensure the Netflix zombie movie got a surprising shout-out on the Academy Awards stage. An entire clip from the movie was shown during the on-air ceremony, a very rare appearance from the undead on the Oscars stage.

A rare appearance from horror… period… at the Academy Awards!

Here’s the full list of Top 5 winners announced in the video package:

  1. Army of the Dead
  2. Cinderella
  3. Minamata
  4. Spider-Man: No Way Home
  5. Tick, Tick… Boom!

Horror fans had been rallying for James Wan’s Malignant to make the cut, and while the film did break into the Top 10, it unfortunately didn’t make it into the final Top 5.

Snyder’s Army of the Dead already received a non-horror prequel titled Army of Thieves, and a live-action sequel movie is on the way along with an animated prequel series.

It’s interesting to note that Zack Snyder’s Justice League also received an “honorary Oscar” last night, with fans voting for the film to take home the “Biggest Cheer Moment” award.
