Wesley Snipes ‘Blade’ Trilogy Coming to Netflix on April 1st!

While we continue waiting for Marvel’s Blade reboot to make Mahershala Ali our new vampire-slayer, the original trilogy of Wesley Snipes Blade movies is headed to Netflix!

The streaming service has announced today that Blade, Blade II and Blade: Trinity will be slaying their way onto Netflix on April 1st, and that’s no April Fool’s joke.

Released over 20 years ago, the original Blade movie was Marvel’s first big screen success story, years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe began dominating Hollywood. It was a rated “R” comic book movie at a time when comic book movies weren’t coming out left and right, paving the way for the endless comic book adaptations and Marvel movies to come in its wake.

As Meagan Navarro noted a few years back, “Blade holds up well not just as an action-horror film but for its historical relevance to the dominating genre of superhero adaptations.”

She continued, “Blade proved there was a fanbase for horror comic adaptations.”

Blade II was released four years later in 2002, directed by Guillermo del Toro, who at the time was fresh off making Cronos, Mimic, and The Devil’s Backbone. Many consider that first sequel to be even better than the original Blade movie from 1998. Two years after that, Blade: Trinity ended the Wesley Snipes Blade trilogy in 2004, that film directed by David S. Goyer.

Blade II, it’s worth noting, actually just turned 20 years old this week. Guillermo del Toro reflected on Twitter, “20 years ago- only 12 weeks after wrapping principal Photography on The Devil’s Backbone (We edited and mixed fast!!) I was in preproduction on Blade II. We shot in Prague- with a great cast and crew- Happy B-day reaper Boys!!”

With films like The New Mutants, Venom and Morbius only now making horror-superhero movies popular at the box office, let’s not forget that Blade was blending the two 20 years earlier. While we wait for the MCU’s new take on the character, it’s the perfect time to revisit the original trilogy that started it all. You can begin streaming all three Blade movies on April 1!
