‘Very Young Frankenstein’ Ordered to Series at FX from ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Team

Based on the classic Mel Brooks movie, the new small screen project “Very Young Frankenstein” has been officially ordered to series over at FX, Variety reports this afternoon.

Mel Brooks is executive producing the brand new series project.

The new series hails from a trio of creative minds behind FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows“: Stefani Robinson, the writer and showrunner for the new series; Taika Waititi, attached to direct the pilot; and Garrett Basch. All three will executive produce.

Very Young Frankenstein blends inspiration from the fan-favorite movie with the inventive, irreverent spirit that has defined FX comedies over the years, making this a completely original take on the classic story,” said Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment. “In the hands of FX veterans Stefani, Taika and Garrett, alongside the iconic Mel Brooks, we know that fans will have as much fun watching this series as we’re having making it.”

The cast features Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Dolly Wells (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Spencer House (“Space Force”), Nikki Crawford (“Cruel Intentions”), Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals), and Cary Elwes (Saw) as the President of the United States.

The 1974 original starred Gene Wilder as a young Dr. Frankenstein, who followed in his ancestor’s freaky footsteps by reanimating a dead body after inheriting a castle in Transylvania. Peter Boyle, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, and Madeline Kahn also starred in Mel Brooks’ brilliantly outrageous riff on Mary Shelley’s classic story.

Stay tuned for more details on the “Very Young Frankenstein” series.
