Andrew Bowser (Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls) has announced his next feature film project, taking to Kickstarter to raise finishing funds for Turmoil in the Toybox.
What is Turmoil in the Toybox, you ask? Well, it’s a highly unique project from a highly unique filmmaker, and it all began with a 1984 television special that Bowser stumbled across.
He explains, “I have been a fan of the original special since I first saw it on YouTube 7 or 8 years ago. The special is titled The Deception of a Generation and features host Gary Greenwald interviewing author Phil Phillips who is promoting his book Turmoil in the Toybox.”
“The special is full of fear mongering and satanic panic as Phil explains his bonkers theories to Gary. Phil believes that the devil himself is using toys and cartoons to corrupt America’s children and turn them away from God,” Bowser explains. “The special is ludicrous, their perspective on these toys and cartoons is beyond parody…but I still thought…what if I did parody these men? This way of thinking? What would this outlook lead to? What if every fear Phil has comes true? Smurfs are evil, He-Man is occultic, The Care Bears want to steal Christ’s place on the Throne of Heaven! Well in that investigation certainly…lies a horror film!”
Bowser has utilized makeup effects and camera trickery to composite himself into the 1980s special to “rewrite the narrative and explore the story of a man truly losing grip on reality.”
Long story short, Andrew Bowser’s 63-minute feature film Turmoil in the Toybox will feature monstrous versions of our favorite 1980s toys that come to life in a “found footage finale that features all sorts of SATURDAY MORNING THEMED NIGHTMARE CREATURES that attack Phil and chase him and Sarah through the studio and straight into HELL.”
Bowser is raising money on Kickstarter to complete the visual effects work on these monster toys, along with things like “sound design, score, festival submissions, legal fees & more.”
