With the Scream franchise back in theaters and the horror genre continuing to kick ass at the box office, you knew it was only a matter of time before the Scary Movie saga returned.
Variety reports this afternoon that Paramount is resurrecting the Scary Movie franchise with a brand new reboot movie, which will likely arrive in theaters in 2025.
Variety notes in their report, “Paramount Pictures announced that it is partnering with “Fast and Furious” mega-producer Neal H. Moritz to resurrect the dormant franchise. Scary Movie is going into production in the fall of 2024, and should hit theaters in 2025.”
“Scary Movie is also being made as part of the Paramount’s first look partnership with Miramax, the studio behind the film franchise. Miramax will fully finance the production, with Paramount handling distribution,” Variety further details in today’s report.
Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, the first Scary Movie was released in 2000, just four years after Wes Craven reinvigorated the horror genre with his meta slasher masterpiece, Scream.
The film parodied horror movies of the time including Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Blair Witch Project, and the horror-comedy spoof scared up $278 million at the worldwide box office. The success of that first Scary Movie paved the way for an entire franchise of horror spoofs, five of them in total released between 2000 and 2013.
Luiz H.C. celebrated 20 years of Scary Movie right here on Bloody Disgusting back in 2020. Luiz astutely wrote, “I’m now certain that Scary Movie and its subsequent sequels are responsible for introducing thousands of non-horror-fans to classic genre tropes and iconography in a “safe” comedic environment. If you think about it, this franchise probably acted as a gateway drug for some folks that had never given real scary movies a chance.”
“The film itself was a rather vulgar retelling of the first Scream,” Luiz added. “The always-lovable Anna Farris stars as “Cindy Campbell” (our stand-in for Sidney Prescott), who realizes that she’s being stalked by a goofier incarnation of Ghostface. A lot of violent slapstick and extremely dated 90s references ensue as Cindy and her ill-fated friends race against time and attempt to discover the killer’s secret identity, recreating iconic horror scenes along the way.”
You simply can’t have Scary Movie without Anna Faris and Regina Hall. Here’s hoping they’re both able to book returns in the upcoming reboot, which will likely spoof the many hit horror movies that have come along since the franchise died off in 2013. Stay tuned for more.
