Taissa Farmiga is back in the habit as Sister Irene in The Nun 2, and a first look image debuted over at EW teases the terror in store for her when she faces against Valak (Bonnie Aarons) once more.

It’s been two years since the most recent movie in The Conjuring Universe – 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, but that dry streak comes to an end later this year with The Nun 2, a sequel to the spinoff hit from 2018. Despite the poor critical reception, Corin Hardy’s The Nun was a MASSIVE box office hit, scaring up a whopping $365 million in theaters. The Nun is actually the highest grossing film in the entire Conjuring Universe to date, and yes that includes the two core The Conjuring movies directed by James Wan.
It was only natural that Valak the demonic nun would return in a sequel, and indeed The Nun 2 is currently slated for theatrical release on September 8, 2023, a full five years after Valak dominated the box office in her first solo movie. This time around, Michael Chaves (Curse of La Llorona, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) is taking over as director.
The plot synopsis for The Nun 2, you ask? Here’s what we know so far…
“1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit THE NUN follows SISTER IRENE as she once again comes face to face with the demonic force VALAK – THE DEMON NUN.”
Chaves told EW, “Maurice made his way to France and he’s working at this boarding school as kind of a handyman,” says Chaves. “He has a friendship and a flirtation with one of the teachers there, and you can see him starting to mature, so that’s where our characters start out. But we know from the first film that there’s something terrible inside of him, that Valak escaped within him, and events pull Irene back on this collision course with her old friend.”
Chaves teases that his film will also connect to the wider cinematic universe.
In addition to Farmiga and Aarons reprising their roles, The Nun 2 also includes Storm Reid (“Euphoria”) alongside Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia franchise) and Katelyn Rose Downey (Clean Sweep).
