Sony Shuffles ‘Twisted Metal’ Revival Developer

Last year, it was revealed that Sony was in the process of reviving the Twisted Metal series to coincide with the upcoming TV series. That’s still the plan, but according to Video Games Chronicle, the game is now changing developers.

According to VGC’s sources, the Twisted Metal revival was being handled by UK-based Destruction All-Stars developer Lucid Games. However, after that title’s lacklustre performance, Sony has decided to move the development to one of its first-party studios in Europe.

Understandably, Sony wants to make both the game and the TV series match up in terms of quality so that one’s struggles wouldn’t cause the other to falter. Sony essentially confirmed this last week during its presentation at CES 2022, talking up its commitment to the franchise, while noting that the TV series was in development.

The TV series was first announced back in 2019, and is the brainchild of Deadpool and Zombieland duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The action-comedy series will feature Avengers star Anthony Mackie, and will be written by Michael Jonathan Smith (“Cobra Kai”).

The story would follow a “motor-mouthed outsider” who is offered a chance at a better life, but would have to successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland for that to come to fruition. Aided by a trigger-happy car thief, the outsider would face “savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers”, including the deranged Sweet Tooth himself.
