Sony Removes ‘El Muerto’ Movie Starring Bad Bunny from the Release Calendar

We had learned back in April of last year that music superstar Bad Bunny would be starring as Marvel Comics character El Muerto in a solo movie for Sony, a role that was hand-picked by Bad Bunny himself. THR brings us an update on the project this afternoon, revealing that Sony has now removed the planned upcoming movie from its current release schedule.

THR reports, “The feature project, which had Jonás Cuarón, the son of filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, in the director’s chair, was slated for a Jan. 12, 2024 release date but Sony announced Wednesday that it had taken the title off its release schedule.”

Cited in the report, Bad Bunny’s touring schedule and the ongoing WGA Strike are likely the main reasons why Sony has put a stop to El Muerto pre-production at this time.

The site also notes that professional wrestler Mercedes Varnado (aka Sasha Banks) was being eyed for a role, while Marvin Jones III was being eyed to play crime lord Tombstone.

“It is unclear what the fate of the project will be as it’s not clear how long Bad Bunny can remain attached,” The Hollywood Reporter goes on to explain in their report today.

Stay tuned for more on the El Muerto movie as we learn it.

Deadline reminds, “The character of El Muerto aka Juan Carlos was a super powered wrestler who originally fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match in which he nearly unmasked the webslinger before being stung by Spider-Man with a paralyzing poison.

“After his oppressor El Dorado came to claim his life, he was saved by Spider-Man, after which the two team up to defeat Dorado.”
