Taking a cue from The Midnight Walk and its use of stop motion animation, DeadlyCrow Games has revealed their own stop motion horror adventure title in Mutter. Available to wishlist now on Steam, there’s also a demo available for players to get a taste of the game’s creepy atmosphere.
In Mutter (German for “mother”), you play as Maddox Holloway, a 9-year-old boy in rural England, 1940. With his father on the front lines of World War II, Maddox’s mother is faced with a dark affliction that is slowly consuming her, twisting her into something monstrous. Maddox’s must now struggle to face fear, suffering, and a crushing sense of responsibility, confronting the creature his mother is becoming while holding onto who she once was.
As you wander the countryside, players will uncover the tragic mystery behind Maddox’s family’s curse. More than a fight for survival, Mutter aims to tell an unsettling tale about the fragile bonds of family, and the quiet horrors of war. With the game, the team aims to tap into the psychological tension and “memorable emotional impact” rather than traditional horror.
Along with environmental puzzle-solving, Maddox must also tend the garden, gather vegetables and herbs, and craft items needed to endure his adventure and progress through the story. Along with crafting specific recipes for elaborate potions, you’ll also be creating healing soups and food dishes to keep Maddox, and his mother, alive.
