The new adaptation of Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (It, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home) is currently missing in action, originally set for release in September 2022 before more recently being bumped to April 2023. As we learned over the summer, the WB/New Line movie is now without a release date entirely, and we’re waiting to hear more on that.
In the meantime, star Lewis Pullman (The Strangers: Prey at Night) has offered up some thoughts on Salem’s Lot in a chat with ComicBook.com, teasing the faithfulness to Stephen King‘s novel. How faithful is the new adaptation? According to Pullman, quite faithful.
Pullman tells the site, “Gary Dauberman, the director, is really keen on doing justice to the book. But also, the previous adaptation was a two-parter, because it’s such a hefty book and there are so many different moving parts and so many characters. So there are some parts where Gary had to press and find what was really at the heart of the movie to keep in, but for the most part, he’s really true to the book and keeping a lot of the original dialogue in there. He’s a Stephen King hound dog so he doesn’t wanna do Stephen dirty.”
The actor adds, “So I think it’s in good hands, Gary’s a really smart guy who has a keen eye for things. I think, not just lean on the jump scares, but lean on the more conceptual and visual things that, rather than a shock that fades out of your body in the next five minutes, something that’s more visual, like an imprint that burnt into your retinas as a disturbing image that you’ll wake up in the middle of the night that you can’t shake out of your head.”
James Wan produces for Warner Bros. and New Line, with Gary Dauberman (It, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home) writing the script and also directing the new movie.
Salem’s Lot 2023 is set “circa 1975 (when King’s book was first published).”
In Salem’s Lot 2023, “Haunted by an incident from his childhood, author Ben Mears returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to discover the town is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire and his loyal servant.”
The cast includes Lewis Pullman, Makenzie Leigh, Alfre Woodard, Bill Camp, John Benjamin Hickey, Nicholas Crovetti, Jordan Preston Carter, William Sadler, Spencer Treat Clark, Cade Woodward, Debra Christofferson, and Pilou Asbaek.
Dauberman’s creative team includes director of photography Michael Burgess (Annabelle Comes Home, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), production designer Marc Fisichella (Ma, The Maze Runner), editor Luke Ciarrocchi (Glass, Split), composers Nathan Barr (The House with a Clock in Its Walls, The Great) and Lisbeth Scott (American Son, Tumble Leaf), costume designer Virginia Johnson (The New Mutants, Mile 22), and first assistant director Jeffrey “JP” Wetzel (Malignant, Annabelle Comes Home).
Fresh off Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Tobe Hooper directed the very first adaptation of Salem’s Lot back in 1979, and a new mini-series followed in its wake more recently, in 2004.
