Publisher SNEG Brings Back Classic SSI PC Games ‘Veil of Darkness’, ‘Dark Legions’ [Trailer]

Old-school PC gamers will recall Strategic Simulations Inc. (or SSI, if you’re cool) from the 80s and 90s. Primarily known for their strategy wargames, the company also dabbled in other genres, including some genre fare. Lucky for you, publisher SNEG will be bringing some of SSI’s titles to Steam and GOG.com later this month, including the action-adventure horror game Veil of Darkness and the dark fantasy strategy game Dark Legions.

“As another step in preservation of games’ history, we are happy to be working on bringing back more classics published by Strategic Simulations Inc. years ago, says Oleg Klapovskiy, Director at SNEG. “In the early 90s SSI was releasing one of the best strategies and RPG games of that time. Quite a few of them opened the world of video games to us and we are paying them back now. The meticulously designed mechanics of these games stand up to the test of time and the gameplay has a lot to offer to modern players – both those who remember the originals and those who will experience it for the first time.”

Released in March 1993, Veil of Darkness centres on the player surviving a cargo plane crash, where they eventually find themselves in a remote village in a Romanian valley. It turns out that you’ve been prophesied as the “chosen one” to destroy Kairn, a vampire lord who long ago murdered his father and brothers so he could inherit control of the valley. Kairn has used his powers to cut off the village from the outside world, and wields an army of flesh-devouring ghouls and werewolves. It’s up to you to stop him, or die trying. You can wishlist Veil of Darkness here.

Meanwhile, the 1994 DOS game Dark Legions (which you can wishlist here) puts players in control of an army against the computer or another human. The balance of power in the dark realm of Tahr Carog has been broken. One of the two twin power orbs is lost, and the realm is in chaos. As the holder of one of the orbs, you must combat your opponent – the holder of the second power orb – until one of you loses his orb, and the other prevails. You’ll create an army of up to 50 beings from 16 different characters, each with unique powers and abilities.
