New ‘American Psycho’ Film Is “Completely Different,” Major Stars “Turned It Down” Says Author Bret Easton Ellis

It was back in 2024 that director Luca Guadagnino (Suspiria, Bones and All) and writer Scott Z. Burns (Contagion, The Bourne Ultimatum) were announced for a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis‘ 1991 novel American Psycho.

Austin Butler was poised to star as serial killer Patrick Bateman, but nothing has officially been set so far, and casting discussions on this project continue.

“A couple of high-profile actors, whom I can’t name, have turned it down,” Ellis recently commented on his podcast. “I think maybe because they don’t want to be in the shoes of Christian Bale.”

Ellis noted that Burns has since completed a new draft of the script after several actors passed on the previous version.

“From what I’m told, this movie is completely different from Mary Harron’s 2000 movie,” said Ellis. “It’s a completely different take, and going to bear no resemblance to that movie.”

The Lionsgate film will be produced by Guadagnino’s Frenesy Films. Sam Pressman, the son of original American Psycho producer Edward R. Pressman, will executive produce through Pressman Film.

In the satirical take on masculinity, wealthy New York City investment banking executive Patrick Bateman hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.
