Mosquitoes Drive a Mother to Extremes in ‘Bloodsuckers’ from ‘Midsommar’ Producer

Mosquitoes are a common nuisance, but the little insects will drive one mother to extremes in the darkly humorous psychological thriller Bloodsuckers.

Variety reports that Charades will launch the Swedish film with a promo reel at the European Film Market in Berlin next month.

The story follows Johanna, who leaves with her husband Linus and two children for a well-deserved family vacation to a cabin in the Scandinavian wilderness. Despite the family promising her she can get some rest, there is no calm moment.

During a visit to a nearby murder scene, mosquitoes begin to swarm Johanna. Irritating at first, she eventually finds unexpected peace when allowing one to bite her. The experience awakens her selfish side, and with each bite, her desire to break free from the family grows. Nature’s influence makes her transform into a mother driven to extremes in pursuit of her desire.

Currently in post-production, Elin Grönblom directs from a script she co-wrote with Josefin Sonck.

Josefin Sonck, Jesper Salén, Lennart Jähkel, Ing-Marie Carlsson, Amanda Eklund, and Elias Rinaldo star.

Mylla Films, a genre label launched by Patrik Andersson (Midsommar) and Jakob Abrahamsson, produces alongside Good Hand Production.

Bloodsuckers stands out through its singular blend of psychological thriller, dark humor, and an unsettling portrait of family life, exquisitely crafted and executed by Elin Grönblom and Josefin Sonck,” said Andersson and Abrahamsson. “It’s a film that will hit close to home – wherever home is.”

“The film blends everything we love in Scandi cinema — (very) dark humor, sharp social critique and close character study — and refreshingly takes on the sacro-saint institution of the family,” added Charades’ co-founder Carole Baraton. “We can not wait to bring Elin’s radical yet playful voice to audiences.”
