‘Mama 2’? Andy & Barbara Muschietti Aren’t Ruling Out a Future Sequel to 2013 Movie

It was back in 2013 that sibling duo Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti arrived on the horror scene with the Guillermo del Toro-produced Mama, which of course paved the way for the Muschiettis to revive Stephen King’s iconic IT property with two big screen movies and a prequel television series that is wrapping up its first season this Sunday night on HBO Max.

But while a sequel to Mama was announced the very same year the movie was released, the property never did end up launching a franchise. Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kölsch (Starry Eyes, Pet Sematary) had signed on to rewrite and direct Mama 2 in 2016, but that project never got off the ground. Is it still possible we’ll see Mama back on screen someday?

Both Andy and Barbara Muschietti took part in a Reddit Ask-Me-Anything chat this week to promote the Season One finale of “IT: Welcome to Derry” this Sunday night (December 14), and Barbara fielded a question about the potential future of the Mama property.

“No one in the Muschietti universe ever really dies,” Barbara Muschietti teased during the Reddit AMA conversation. “We hold Mama very close to our hearts, so who knows?
