Emmy winner Damon Lindelof (“Lost,” “Watchmen”) will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner on “The Chain” for HBO.
The network has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order to the show, which is based on Adrian McKinty‘s 2019 novel of the same name.
Details are under wraps, but the show is said to be expanding the mythology of the book — in which a mother, targeted by a dangerous group of masterminds, is forced to commit a crime to save her kidnapped daughter or risk losing her forever.
Lindelof co-wrote the pilot with Carly Wray (“Mad Men,” “Westworld”). McKinty serves as co-executive producer.
Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer executive producers for Media Res (“The Morning Show”), the co-studio behind the series. Shane Salerno also executive produces.
“From the moment I heard the wild and original premise of Adrian’s book, I was shocked, surprised and angry I hadn’t thought of it myself,” said Lindelof. “I’ve always wanted to try to adapt a great thriller and this one has all the dark, weird, exhilarating touches that fire up my imagination.”
“We are honored by our continued partnership with Damon Lindelof, one of the most singular and distinctive creators of our time,” added Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming. “‘The Chain’ promises to continue his legacy of dropping us into the pit of the human brain and delivering in ways not only emotionally daring but, ultimately, transformative.”
“The Chain” is the first project under Lindelof’s two-year overall deal with HBO, which began in September.
Edgar Wright was attached to direct a feature adaptation of the novel for Universal back in 2020, but it name came to fruition.
