Speculation over what Dragami Games was hinting at last month with Lollipop Chainsaw is over. Per Frontline Gaming Japan, Yoshimi Yasuda, president and CEO of Dragami Games, has officially announced that Lollipop Chainsaw is getting a remake. Tentatively titled Lollipop Chainsaw Remake, the title is slated for a 2023 release.
Development of the game will be handled by a combination of development staff from the original version (no word on if James Gunn or Lollipop Chainsaw‘s co-director Goichi “Suda51” will be involved), while Yasuda will serve as producer. And in case you were wondering, Yasuda has been in contact with the US publisher, Warner Bros., who are supporting the team in the remake.
In an official message to fans, Yasuda said he purchased the rights to Lollipop Chainsaw from Kadokawa Games, which had published the game in Japan back in 2012. Yasuda says that the original Lollipop Chainsaw team “think of the game as very precious” and were concerned that fans were no longer able to play the game. As such, the team “did not want to leave it in limbo, where players who want to play it cannot.”
That being said, the Lollipop Chainsaw Remake will have to undergo a few changes, namely in the music. The original game’s 16 licensed songs won’t all be carried over, due to (what else?) licensing. Therefore, aside from “a few licensed tracks”, the soundtrack for the remake will consist of new music. In addition, Dragami will be “taking a more realistic approach to the graphics” for the remake, due to the increased power of modern consoles.
Lollipop Chainsaw was originally released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2012.
