One of the coolest indie films of the late 1990s was Vincenzo Natali’s brutal sci-fi horror Cube, in which six strangers are involuntarily placed in an endless maze containing deadly traps.
Acquired and released by Lionsgate, the low-budget, high-concept horror was a home video hit and spawned two sequels, Cube²: Hypercube (2002) and Cube Zero (2004), not to mention this year’s Japanese remake.
Speaking of remakes, Lionsgate had been developing a modern take on the film, titled Cubed, with Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts writing and up-and-comer Saman Kesh (“Controller”, Doors) attached to direct.
Now, Bloody Disgusting has learned that Lionsgate is starting from scratch and taking fresh pitches on a brand new Cube.
It’s been a tough reboot to crack as the previous incarnation, which was to be produced by Roy Lee (The Ring, The Grudge, It), was never deciphered.
As Bloody Disgusting also revealed, Lionsgate is also hoping to strike gold with a new entry in the Leprechaun franchise, which they’ve also been seeking fresh pitches on. If that weren’t enough, they’re also looking to revive The Blair Witch Project franchise.
Who knows what else is going on behind the scenes, but we’ll update you as news breaks.
