One of the biggest viral sensations of 2025, Pop Mart’s adorably monstrous Labubu dolls are getting their own movie over at Sony, The Hollywood Reporter lets us know this afternoon.
THR reports, “Sony Pictures picked up the screen rights to the Chinese doll brand with the aim of making a movie and, in success, launching a franchise.” The report continues…
“No producer or filmmaker is attached at this stage, as the deal was just signed this week. It is also too early to tell whether the potential movie would be live-action or animated.”
Artist Kasing Lung originally created the Labubu doll, which exploded in popularity here in the United States when Pop Mart brought the blind box dolls into American stores.
Wikipedia explains, “The series features zoomorphic elves with exaggerated facial expressions, of which the central figure is Labubu, a monster with sharp teeth, large ears and a scruffy appearance.” The dolls have been compared to Disney’s Stitch from the Lilo & Stitch franchise as well as Gizmo from Gremlins, two similarly loveable little pop culture monsters.
Celebrities including Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, BLACKPINK’s Lisa, and WWE superstar Rhea Ripley helped drive the viral craze that turned the Labubu doll into a must-have collectible.
Several artists have even made their own custom Labubu dolls based on horror icons like Freddy Krueger and Art the Clown, which you’ll be able to find through a quick search on Etsy.
Stay tuned for more on Sony’s Labubu doll movie as we learn it.
