Kumail Nanjiani Teases “Really Fun” ‘Very Young Frankenstein’ Pilot

FX recently wrapped production on the pilot for “Very Young Frankenstein,” based on Mel Brooks‘ 1973 horror parody Young Frankenstein.

Brooks is executive producing alongside showrunner Stefani Robinson (“What We Do in the Shadows”) and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do in the Shadows), who dircted the pilot.

The cast includes Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Dolly Wells (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Spencer House (“Space Force”), Nikki Crawford (“Cruel Intentions”), Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals), and Cary Elwes (Saw).

Just like the rest of us, they’re all waiting to find out if the pilot is going to series.

“I think we’re still waiting to hear if it’s going to series. Shooting that was really fun,” Nanjiani told Deadline.

“I’ve been friends with Zach [Galifianakis] for a very long time. I’ve been friends with Taika [Waititi] for a very long time. I’d never worked really with either of them. Well, I’d done a commercial with Taika, but I’d never worked with Zach. I opened for him on the road years and years ago.”

He adds, “I love the original movie. Fan of those guys. It was a really fun shoot.”

20th Television is behind the project. Plot details are under wraps.

Additional executive producers include Garrett Basch (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Brooks’ producing partner Kevin Salter (“History of the World, Part II”), and original Young Frankenstein producer Michael Gruskoff.

In the original film, written by Brooks and star Gene Wilder, the grandson of the infamous Dr. Frankenstein, struggling to prove that his grandfather was not as insane as people believe, discovers the process that reanimates a dead body.
