‘Janur Ireng’ – First Look at Director Kimo Stamboel’s Prequel to Indonesia’s Box Office Horror Hit

Indonesian master of horror Kimo Stamboel (The Queen of Black Magic, Dancing Village: The Curse Begins) is back with Janur Ireng, the prequel to box office hit Sewu Dino.

How much of a hit was Sewu Dino in Indonesia? Wikipedia recaps, “On the first day of release, Sewu Dino gained 187,000 moviegoers, one of the biggest opening days for a local film. As of April 25, the film surpassed one million tickets sales, making it one of the fastest local films to reach one million admissions. And it surpassed 3 million viewers on two weeks.”

Variety details, “Stamboel’s prequel expands the horror universe established in the Southeast Asian blockbuster, exploring the origins of the supernatural curse that drives the franchise.”

Set years before the original film’s events, the story delves into dark rituals and ancient forces that awaken the terrifying entity, examining the human sacrifices connected to its power.

The worldwide rights to Janur Ireng were acquired by international sales and production company EST N8. No word yet on a U.S. release date. Watch the teaser and expect more soon.

Sewu Dino was also directed by Kimo Stamboel.
