‘It Lives Inside’ Debuts to $3 Million; ‘The Nun II’ Passes $200 Million Worldwide

This past weekend marked the release of Bishal Dutta’s horror movie It Lives Inside from NEON, and the film debuted in the #7 spot on the domestic box office charts.

It Lives Inside, a PG-13 fright fest, scared up $2,630,000 in 2,005 theaters across the United States over the weekend, while the film’s worldwide debut is $3,064,233.

No word yet on the at-home release for It Lives Inside, but the theatrical strategy is sure to boost the film’s profile for that eventual rollout. Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “It Lives Inside introduces a bold new voice, creating a captivating new spin on demonic horror.”

Megan Suri (“Never Have I Ever,” Missing), Neeru Bajwa (Jatt & Juliet 1 & 2), Mohana Krishnan, Vik Sahay (Captain Marvel, “Chuck”) and Betty Gabriel (Get Out) star.

In It Lives Inside, “Sam is desperate to fit in at school, rejecting her Indian culture and family to be like everyone else. When a mythological demonic spirit latches onto her former best friend, she must come to terms with her heritage in order to defeat it.”

The initial inspiration for the film emerged from the filmmaker’s own childhood experience of being born in India before emigrating to be raised in America. The story draws heavily on both Indian demonic legend and a very personal family story from Dutta’s grandfather. The original screenplay was penned by Dutta based on a story by Dutta and Ashish Mehta.

The Conjuring Universe, meanwhile, continues to win at the box office with The Nun II, which has once again found itself in the #1 spot on the charts for the third week in a row.

The Nun II’s worldwide total just passed $200 million ($204,222,000, to be exact), while the return of Valak has now scared up $69,222,000 here in the United States.

Back in 2018, The Nun ended its worldwide run with a Conjuring Universe-best $365 million, but the sequel is a success story even if it doesn’t end up coming close to that high.

In The Nun II, now playing in theaters, “1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit THE NUN follows SISTER IRENE as she once again comes face to face with the demonic force VALAK – THE DEMON NUN.”

Taissa Farmiga is back as Sister Irene, with Bonnie Aarons again playing the demonic nun known as Valak. Storm Reid (“Euphoria”) also joins the Conjuring Universe in this one.

Michael Chaves (Curse of La Llorona, Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) directed The Nun II.

Elsewhere on the charts, A24’s Talk to Me is STILL making money, the film scoring another $447,000 in just 420 theaters over the weekend. The worldwide total is now $70 million.
