While presenting the 4K restoration of Cronos at Sundance, writer-director Guillermo del Toro confirmed that an extended cut of Frankenstein is coming soon.
Attendees report that he referred to the new version as the “all the stitches” cut for the loyal fans.
It’s unknown at this time whether this edition will debut in theaters, on Netflix, or on physical media — which is also in the works.
In the adaptation of Mary Shelley‘s genre-defining 1818 horror novel, brilliant but egotistical scientist Victor Frankenstein brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, and Charles Dance star.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “Frankenstein is absolutely breathtaking, with imagery and set pieces that instantly embed themselves in your memory. It showcases del Toro’s strength as a filmmaker, creating immersive worlds that enhance what he does best: championing monsters and their tragic humanity instead of using them to scare us.”
Frankenstein was recently nominated for nine Academy Awards: Best Picture, Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, Original Score, Cinematography, Production Design, and Sound.
