In January, the George A. Romero Foundation teamed up with Bloody Disgusting to create a new scripted audio series, The Dead. Today, The Dead is seeking aspiring writers to create stories in the spirit of George A. Romero. We’re looking for new and original character-driven stories focusing on the survivors of a zombie outbreak!
Stories should focus on the human experience and conflicts following a cataclysmic event, with the ever-present threat of an overwhelming zombie population. Pitches should not be tied to any previously established characters, locations, or intellectual property.
Writers can apply at PitchTheDead.com. Writers will be asked to pitch their story in the form of a Drabble (a 100-word micro-fiction) and upload previously written samples of their work. If selected, writers will be commissioned to write a 90-180 page screenplay expanding on the premise laid out within their Drabble, and will be invited to participate in the production of their story.
The deadline for entries? May 17, 2023.

The podcast will release several four-episode mini-seasons. The first three seasons, Precious Cargo, Ephemeris, and a third untitled season are currently in production and set to begin releasing this summer. If you need ideas for your own pitch, you can find Precious Cargo‘s 100-word pitch below.
“As they prepare for their much-needed vacation, cargo handlers CATALINA and JARREN finish loading containers onto a freighter. A last-minute container arrives carrying ELLIE, a body to be expatriated from Australia to the United States. The plane takes off in the middle of a horrible storm; pilots TROY and JENNIFER question why they could not wait it out. Mid-flight, Catalina and Jarren hear noises coming from the container, and when they investigate, they discover that Ellie has reanimated.
“The crew must confront their own troubled relationships while navigating the storm, and unbeknownst to them, the beginning of the zombie apocalypse…”
