Get ready for more of The Walking Dead game adaptations. This time in tabletop RPG form. Free League Publishing has announced the official The Walking Dead Universe RPG on Kickstarter, which has already surpassed its initial $24,000 USD funding goal.
A co-production between AMC Networks and Free League Publishing, the RPG series will introduce new story elements while drawing inspiration from the current series and upcoming spin-offs. In The Walking Dead Universe RPG, you will play as people struggling to survive in a hostile world. You’ll face challenges ranging from the lack of essential supplies, conflicts rising within the group, to hidden construction flaws in your safe haven. And of course, Walkers looking to feast on your flesh. Pushing the boundaries of the survival genre, every group can tailor the gaming experience to suit their own interests and play style.
The game can be played either in Campaign Mode or Survival Mode. In Campaign Mode, it is your goals and choices, and the result of your group efforts, that create the storyline. Whereas in Survival Mode, you are faced with a dangerous situation that needs to be handled immediately. Survival Mode scenarios often feature locations and characters from the TV series.
The rules of The Walking Dead Universe RPG are based on the acclaimed Year Zero Engine, which has been used in Free League’s other tabletop games such as the ALIEN RPG, Blade Runner RPG, Mutant: Year Zero and Forbidden Lands. The rules have been uniquely tailored for The Walking Dead Universe, designed to blend seamlessly with the story, and allow players to focus on character drama while pushing the themes of the game to the forefront.
As mentioned, the game has already crushed its initial goals, with the stretch goals for additional maps, character classes and other goodies next in line. In fact, if you pledge before the Kickstarter ends, you get early access to PDF versions of the complete Core Rulebook and Starter Set.
The Walking Dead Universe RPG is expected to ship this November.
