If you want something done right, you sometimes have to do it yourself. That’s probably what indie developer ranj’s mindset was with Resident Evil 3, as they’ve been working away at their own remake of Capcom’s classic. In fact, you can play an early version of the remake right now!

Available on ranj’s itch.io, Resident Evil 3 Remake Fangame (yep, that’s the title) is powered by the Unreal Engine 4, and supports both classic “fixed camera angles” and a third-person perspective. At the moment, the alpha version of the remake is about 30 minutes in length, and is missing cutscenes and those iconic door opening transitions. And no, Nemesis isn’t here just yet.

This Resident Evil 3 remake also goes old school with its tank controls, eschewing Capcom’s recent remake’s updated control scheme. And thanks to the folks at Residence of Evil, we have two playthroughs for the price of one. Will it address some of the shortcomings of Capcom’s own Resident Evil 3 remake? It’s early yet, but the effort is clearly there.

Big thanks to Residence of Evil and DSOGaming for the heads up.
