Fan Hack Aims to Put Winston Zeddemore in ‘Ghostbusters’ Game for Sega Genesis

When we did our “Based on The Film” article on the various Ghostbusters video games, the Sega Genesis game was one of the better adaptations. As good as that game was, the omission of Winston Zeddemore was pretty disappointing. But, as these things go, leave it to the fans to fix the glaring omissions.

Per Ghostbusters News, a group of fans that include artists, designers, and programmers have banded together to modify the Genesis game’s ROM to add Winston into the game, making him a selectable and fully playable character. According to artist/designer Danilo Dias, Winston’s addition to the game will come later this year. As you can see from his Tweet, they’ve already gotten the character select screen image of Winston created, as well as his basic sprite.

And just to be clear, this isn’t just a reskinning of one of the three existing Ghostbusters in the game. Winston will be his own character.

Ernie Hudson, who played Winston in both original Ghostbusters films and in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, will be lending his likeness to Illfonic’s upcoming Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. Spirits Unleashed is currently in development for PC for Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and Xbox One, with a Q4 2022 release.
