Alongside the big reveal of the Creepshow teaser, there was plenty of other goodies for fans watching the 2023 edition of The Indie Horror Game Showcase. DreadXP and several indie publishers had plenty of reveal trailers, updates and even accolades for current games. Here’s a sampling of what went on during the event. Fresh from the release of El Paso, Elsewhere last week, Strange Scaffold released an accolades trailer showing off select quotes and plenty of amazing scores for the neo-noir horror shooter. And yes, in case you’re wondering, one of those scores is courtesy of BD’s Aaron Boehm, who wrote up a glowing review of the game. El Paso, Elsewhere is out now on PC via Steam, Xbox One and the Xbox Series.
Party for Introverts dropped a short-but-sweet trailer for their upcoming vampire visual novel RPG Cabernet, offering up a fresh glimpse at the immersive world that awaits players. The developers also announced that the dialogue-driven supernatural RPG will feature the vocal talents of Brian David Gilbert, Samantha Béart, Hannah Khalique-Brown, German Segal and Ben Potter. Cabernet is due out on Steam in early 2024.
The long-awaited full release of Ysbryd Games and developer Panstasz’ World of Horror is finally here for PC fans. Unfortunately for console players looking to finally get in on the Junji Ito-inspired game, World of Horror has been delayed from its PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch release to October 26. You can still grab it on Steam, GOG and itch.io today, however.
Not every game during the showcase can be considered “indie”. Really, that doesn’t matter much when we finally got a glimpse of the gameplay for Nightdive Studio’s upcoming Enhanced Edition of System Shock 2. Rebuilt for modern platforms using Nightdive Studios’ proprietary KEX Engine, this new version of System Shock 2 brings the terror of the 1999 original to a whole new generation. The game will release for PC via Steam and GOD, as well as on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series “in the near future”.
DreadXP also took time to show off a several of their own titles, including the reveal of r Stroboskop’s otherworldly horror title Sylvio: Black Waters. The third game in the Sylvio series, Black Waters sees players stranded on an enigmatic alien planet where the ghosts of the past hold the clues to its secrets. Players will discover a mysterious device that allows them to commune with spirits, including one spirit that claims to be the sole survivor of this place. Sylvio: Black Waters is currently in development for release on Steam.
Fans of the recently-released Amanda the Adventurer will head right back in with the announcement of Amanda the Adventurer 2 from MANGLEDmaw Games. Amanda the Adventurer 2 will dive deeper into the twisted story of the titular Amanda, and bring fans back into her super duper charming and not at all horrifying world. A release date will be announced at a later time, but the first game is available now on Steam and the Nintendo Switch.
DreadXP also announced Philisophic Games’ brutal first-person gore-fest HELLPUNK, which will be released on Windows PC via Steam. The repeat Dread X Collection collaborator’s new game “kicks players into the depths of the human mind for a rage-fueled murder-punk nightmare” set in a futuristic setting. Players will pave the road to self-actualization with the blood of their foes and “gleefully dance through the subconscious realm using creative, brutal melee combat.”
Akupara Games has a little something on the way for VR horror fans in Hello Cruel World. Projected to launch sometime in 2024 for VR platforms and Steam, Hello Cruel World puts you in the shoes of an urban explorer livestreamer, who discovers an abandoned lab underneath the depths of a derelict Crab-N-Go restaurant. There, you uncover a scientist’s technology that just so happens to be haunted by a rogue AI. As a result, you’ll have to solve puzzles, avoid danger, and uncover the mystery of the lab while trying to get out alive.
DreadXP also dropped news regarding their dark fantasy RPG Dread Delusion in the form of the “Rise of the Skeletons” update, which is available now on Steam. Alongside a “bevy of combat tweaks, sound, and other general adjustments”, the update adds a new island for you to explore in Summonisle. There, you’ll uncover a rickety graveyard and fight the decrepit old souls that still lurk there. Luckily, you’re also able to summon your own skeleton buddies to help you out.
Poppy Works Ziggurat Interactive showed off their upcoming hack-and-slash Slave Zero X with a new gameplay trailer that, much like its appearance during Feardemic’s Fear Fest earlier this year, brought bloody swordplay and sheer brutality. Slave Zero X releases February 21, 2024 for PC via Steam and GOG, as well as the PlayStation and Xbox Series consoles. There’s also a demo available on Steam and the Xbox.
Developer AkaBaka revealed a fitting Valentine’s Day 2024 release date for its Lovecraftian dating sim Sucker for Love: Date to Die For. That’s February 14, 2024, in case you’re wondering. There’s also a demo available on the game’s Steam page. The follow-up to the 2022 original sees you wooing Eldritch horrors while also dealing with their acolytes who have taken over your hometown.
Developer Celery Emblem and publisher Neon Doctrine released a brand new trailer and a “snacktastic” demo for their upcoming “Majora’s Mask meets ‘90s horror sitcom” game, Tamarindo’s Freaking Dinner. As pizza delivery guy Macario Macabro, you soon find yourself trapped in Tagomago’s Mansion, facing off against a monstrous guest list of hungry, twisted ghouls. It seems the hostess, the cannibal Countess Erzeweth Wátory of Walpurgis, intends to make a meal out of Macario. You have one hour and forty-five minutes to help Macario escape. Tamarindo’s Freaking Dinner launches on Steam in Q3 2024.
Neon Doctrine also revealed a new trailer for developer GameChanger Studio’s macabre creature collector and empire management sim in My Lovely Empress. In the ambitious conclusion to the beloved “My Lovely…” trilogy of games, you rule the Crimson Kingdom with both head and heart as Emperor Hong. In his grief following the death of Empress Xiang, Hong calls upon the powerful yet forbidden entities, Yaoguai, in a bid to resurrect his beloved. However, as you take your nation to greatness by managing the needs of your people and with savvy diplomatic dealings with other rulers, you’re given a choice: be satisfied with what you’ve built and the new relationship(s) you’ve forged or succumb to the dark allure of the Yaoguai and ritualistically sacrifice your people to reunite Emperor Hong with his empress? My Lovely Empress is expected to arrive on Steam, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and the Nintendo Switch in 2024.
Those of you My Friendly Neighborhood fans looking for more Survival Horror action will be happy to know that brother developers brothers John and Evan Szymanski have added a new mode to the game. The new Neighborhorde Mode update (which is free, by the way) brings a terrifying new challenge to the game: survive an onslaught of puppets. Terrorize the masses as one of four playable characters, each with their own unique mechanics in four new combat arenas based on environments from the story campaign.
