Director Yann Demange Promises Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Movie Is Rated “R”

It’s no secret that Marvel’s Blade reboot has been enduring all kinds of behind the scenes issues, with the approach clearly changing and evolving as different filmmakers come and go. At this time, the film is still dated for release on February 14, 2025, with director Yann Demange (“Lovecraft Country”) currently attached to bring Blade back to the big screen.

Marvel’s Blade reboot is part of the latest phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali is starring alongside Mia Goth (X, Pearl).

According to Demange in a new chat with Deadline, he’s been given an “R” rating to bring the iconic blood-sucker back to life in the ruthless fashion that Blade deserves.

They gave me the R, which is so important,” Demange tells Deadline in a new chat.

“We are going to have fun because Mahershala is such a deep actor. I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that,” Demange adds. “He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen.”

Michael Starrbury (When They See Us) wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, and we recently learned that Nic Pizzolatto (“True Detective”) is now working on the script.

The vampire-slaying character was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Gene Colan, introduced in July 1973’s The Tomb of Dracula #10. Wesley Snipes played Blade across three films from 1998 through 2004, and he was played by Sticky Fingaz in a short-lived TV series.
