‘Devil’s Pass’ and the Dangerous Path of Obsession [The Lady Killers Podcast]

You followed a step-by-step plan that killed nine people. What did you think was going to happen?”

Never underestimate a hyperfixation. That obscure historical event or random theory that takes up space in our brains and keeps us from focusing on more important things. But sometimes those hyperfixations spin out of control and put our lives directly in danger. Renny Harlin explores the dangers of all-consuming obsession in Devil’s Pass, a found footage nightmare based on a horrific event with no explanation.

Holly (Holly Goss) has always been obsessed with the Dyatlov Pass Incident. The story of nine hikers who died in the Ural Mountains is one of Russia’s most notorious unsolved mysteries. Assigned to cover the case for a psychology class, Holly’s obsession spins into a documentary collaboration with her conspiracy theorist friend Jenson (Matt Stokoe). Along with two experienced hikers and a sound engineer named Denise (Gemma Atkinson), they travel to Europe and retrace the steps of Igor Dyatlov and his doomed friends, only to discover a similar fate.

In the latest episode of The Lady Killers podcast, co-hosts Jenn Adams, Sammie Roffman, and Rachel Reeves continue a month of snow horror by cutting a path through this found footage fright. Is it ethical for a professor to assign such a dangerous project? Is Denise unfairly objectified? How long should you spend looking for your trail hookup in an avalanche, and why wouldn’t Holly think of her own living room? They’ll answer these questions and more while discussing mutants, experiments, and the Yeti of it all in Harlin’s surprisingly compelling film.
